About Blades Selecting the right band saw blade

1. Band Length
For every band saw machine there is a certain specified band
dimension.
2. Band Width
With horizontal machines the band width is specified by the
manufacturer. Vertical band saw machines allow higher variations of the band
width. However, the general rule is the wider the band saw blade the higher its
stability.
If contours are to be sawn, the smallest radius to be sawn is the limiting
factor for the band width. The graphics below should make the your choice
easier.

3. The cutting material
WIKUS produces four main groups of cutting materials:
Carbon Steel
hardness: approx. 850 HV
tempering resistance: approx. 200oC
![]()
High performance high-speedsteel
hardness: approx. 1000 HV
tempering resistance approx. 600oC
![]()
Carbide
hardness: approx. 1600 HV
tempering resistance approx. 800oC
![]()
Diamond
hardness: approx. 9000HV
The machinability of the material to be cut determines the cutting material.
4. Tooth pitch
Select between constant and variable tooth pitch. Decisive for
the right tooth pitch is the cross section of the band saw blade. The WIKUS
range offers constant and variable tooth pitches, which are listed in the table
below with upper limit and lower limit for the respective cross section.
5. Tooth form
In the WIKUS range, we have the various tooth forms already
optimally paired with the respective cutting material and band dimensions:
raker tooth (S)
skip tooth (L)
for harder, more brittle materials and smaller cross-sections
hook tooth (K)
for long-chipping and ductile materials of greater dimensions
trapezoidal tooth (T)
for a high sawing performance, best surface finish and abrasive materials
6. Types of tooth set
The WIKUS range
offers you the following types of tooth set adapted to the machining tasks:
For carbon steel band saw blades:
SD, WS, RL, GS
For bimetal band saw blades:
SD, GS, SF (special version)
For carbide-tipped band saw blades:
SD
For
carbide-tipped FUTURA and coated band saw blades:
